Saturday Three

Last round for this little series about Saturday. We start with Sam Cooke, who sadly died far too early and had a good number of hit singles before his murder. The next one was written by CCR's John Fogerty and covered years later by Dave Edmunds. Finally one of my favorite songs by Tom Waits. Seldom was a cruising through a Saturday night on the search for solution better described as by him.

Rockabilly Ruled Pt. 2

After writing about the Cramps last week, it's time to talk about another band that at the same time brought back music that had been lost for a long time. The Stray Cats were an American band who celebrated their greatest successes in England and on the continent in the early 80s. In Dave Edmunds, they found a producer who himself was knee-deep in rock 'n' roll. With their first record, they have brought us back closer to the roots of rock music. As a band that played their earthy music as a three-man combo with guitar, stand-up bass and simple drums, they were the sensation of the year in 1981. Decades later, their sound still sounds fresh and urban, setting the standard for all subsequent epigones.

Back To The Very Old Days

A few days ago I was in a mood to look at my blog posts from the time I started starting this blog. I came across an old series, which I kept going at the time and during which I took a closer look at the time of pub rock. I came across a post I wrote 10 years ago and featured Mickey Jupp. He was a singer/songwriter associated with the so called Southend music scene. In the very early 70's he released a few albums with a mix of rockabilly, blues rock and pop. His success was limited but he became a leading figure a few years later at the pub-rock scene and played on the same level as Dr. Feelgood for whom he wrote Down At The Doctors. Other artists like Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe covered his songs after he signed to Stiff record label. I loved to listen to his songs after decades and I think it is necessary to feature him and his music once again.

Willi Resetarits 1969 - 2022

For his dialect blues and rock, the Austrian singer Willi Resetarits was known as "Ostbahn-Kurti" - now the musician has died at the age of 73. He died on Sunday by an accident in his home. He started his career in the late 60's as a member of Schmetterlinge a political agitating band. They got country-wide known as they represented Austria in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1977 where less people understood the irony in their song about commercial mass compatible songs. Since the eighties Resetarits, switched to lead vocals and harmonica, portrayed the rock'n "roll art figure Ostbahn Kurti. He invented the fictional biography of the forgotten Viennese suburban rock'n' roller with proletarian pride, slippery street-smart Viennese wordplay and earthy interpretations of great post-sixties blues and rock classics in the Viennese dialect, including his versions of several songs by Bruce Fire ("Feia"), Townes Van Zandt's "At my Window" (Liagn and lochn) and songs by Dave Edmunds, ZZ Top, Steve Miller or Frank Zappa. In recent years he has been very committed to social projects and became one of the most humorous and therefore most credible and vocal speakers for integration and dignified dealings with refugees and minorities of the republic. He was not a phenomenal musician or songwriter but beyond doubt a very good live artist and I can bear witness when I saw him several times live with his band during the last decades.

Rest easy Willi

Subtle As A Flying Mallet

According to yesterdays post I grabbed out an old copy of Dave Edmund's second album Subtle As A Flying Mallet the second solo album by Welsh lad Dave Edmunds from 1975 after his band Love Sculpture dissolved. Inspired by the sound of Phil Spector he moved with this album from the classic blues-rock patterns to his interpretation of classic wall of sound songs. On the other side there were a few live tracks where he used the members of Brinsley Schwarz as his band (after he produced one of their albums). With this early recordings he was linked with the pub-rock scene in the mid 70's. This record sounds so out-of-time and at the same time contemporary if it is new to you or you didn't listen to for decades.

Rumble And More In Brighton

Bildergebnis für stray cats

It was 40 years ago when my musical preferences changed massive into an new sound that was raw, fast and new when a band appeared that really confused me. Stray Cats from from the melting pot of these days moved to Britain with their own interpretation of classic Rock 'n' Roll in the tradition of Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent and met another addicted one by the name of Dave Edmunds who produced their first album. It was a kind of shock when we listened to their old fashioned music but most of us agreed to their music in these days. It was not another ride on the best of the early days of rock, it was transformation of good old music into the nowaday scene. I remember a lot of greasers moved from their cellars into the streets celebrating their music and I have to admit that I loved their music back then and now because I move back to rockabilly from time to time.

Tracks On Wax

Bildergebnis für dave edmunds

In the days punk and new wave changed my personal music taste completely two guys held up the flag of pub rock constantly. Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe were the keeper of classic Rock 'n' Roll and during the second half of the 70's they released a few classic albums. I was always a fan of how Edmunds used to play his guitar. He wasn't the best guitar player in his time but he knows how to get a great sound out of his instrument. He was able to play the twangy sound as well as fast riffs. A few days ago I found his albums in my collection and thought by myself to take a trip back to the days I listened often to them. It was Tracks On Wax 4 from 1977 that still impresses me. Filled with covers of forgotten gems from the past and a song from his buddy Nick Lowe. Even if times and taste changed these songs are great and it made me happy to hear them once again.

In the afternoon I will go to support Stuttgart in their game against When Wiesbaden. We are at the top of the table (were we belong) and they are a promoted team and it should be a safe win but I didn't saw my team playing constantly well during 90 minutes. But anyway, it will be fun to see some friends again watching this game.

Let's Get Back To Power Pop

Bildergebnis für the rubinoos

It was in the mid of the 70's when bands turned their back to classic rock 'n' roll to search their own identity and they remembered their roots. At this time a lot of bands like Duxe Deluce and Dave Edmunds got back to the native sound of music. The Rubinoos were one of those bands from across the ocean that kept the flag of pub-rock alive. Less songs more than tree minutes made us feel happy. I know that it is a forgotten band but I got back to their songs through the last weeks and I can only say that they still make me happen to them listen again after all these years. Probably close to perfect pop-songs and still worth to listen to.

Trouble

Bildergebnis für hooligans

Last Saturday I went to support Stuttgart against Berlin. When I arrived at the train station I couldn't believe what I saw. The train was filled with more than 100 men dressed in black coats and wearing  balaclavas on their head. We all had problems to find a free wagon because they occupied almost every space. I quickly understood that this train was full of hooligans and I made my thoughts what will happen the next 40 minutes until we arrive at the stadium. All of the normal people stood there trying to act unremarkable and talking no words. It was a very scary atmosphere that I've never been in before. I read a lot about these guys going out for a fight and not to support their team like they should. But listen to them about taking a few days off work to go to Ukraine to battle with the natives makes me think about how stupid people should be doing this. Finally one station before we arrived special police forces stopped the train and put them all out. I have no idea if they arrested them or kept them several hours from other people. At least I don't want to see this once again in reality. By the way we won 1:0 against Berlin. But I will always combine the hooligans to this game.

Twanging Tuesday # 74

In the early 1980s the American band Stray Cats appeared on the scene and brought us back Rockabilly with a heavy influence of New Wave and Punk. Close to their idols Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent they played a new style of Rockabilly, produced by Dave Edmunds who is also based in this genre. It was the hippiest sound of this summer and still a band I like to listen to after all these years.

Get On

It is almost 40 years ago I bought a record with classical Rock 'n' Roll that I found after a long time in my vinyl collection. I was very in to it these days because the rhythm section was so awesome. Seldom heard a bass player and the drummer beating out the rhythm with such a verve and enthusiasm. I asked myself while I put the record on the record player if this kind of music works as well as it did a long time ago. And I was surprised. Most of the songs did - not only as a sentimental touch to the past. The band is called Hurrigane (yes, it was a clerical error by printing their first record) and they were from Finland. They was very big there and they called them Finland's answer to pub rock performers like Dave Edmunds or Dr. Feelgood. Some may say it's just covering old songs but didn't a lot of others the same?

Have a good weekend all of you.

Twanging Tuesday # 67

This song might not have the real twangy sound but it's one of my favorite by Dave Edmunds. It has this kind of bass line that fit to every good Rock 'n' Roll song. And that he's one of the most underrated guitar players that walks on earth isn't need to be told.

What Happened To Pub Rock # 13

After my last post the question arose whether this series with it is finished. I can assure that I will keep this series alive still some time. I think it's time to feature The Flamin' Groovies. The band never attained big commercial meaning, however, fans and critics showed coming group always enthusiastically to themselves from the works from the environs of San Francisco. A reason for her stubborn failure was possibly the fact that the Groovies always played against the ruling music trends. At the beginning of her career they preferred a wild mixture of rock'n'roll and Rhythm & blues, in the 1970s they turned to the Sixties pop after classical coinage and were celebrated as a pioneer of the power pop and even by punk rock and New Wave. Maybe they were how many other groups simply at the wrong time at the wrong place. I have become attentive to The Flamin' Groovies as their album Shake Some Action produced by Dave Edmunds was published. It was a record that is still timeless combining the best of the rock history. So I looked out for their former released albums and was not disappointed to get them. Following songs are from their 1971 record (and probably their best) Teenage Head.

Flamin' Groovies - Teenage Head
Flamin' Groovies - 32-20

Twanging Tuesday # 26

Back in 1980 a band from NYC brought us back the classic rockabilly style. Produced by Dave Edmunds (who else) The Stray Cats played a dynamic one mix from Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent like they today could sound. They were so hot these days that me and some mates went to Cologne to see them live. Three guys with a lot of pomade in the hair and skintight jeans has given a fantastic concert there.

Twanging Tuesday # 23

Most of the songs I posted in this series are very old and nearly forgotten from the 50s and 60s. Today's song was from a musician who can celebrate his 70th birthday today. He formerly played blues with his band Love Sculpture and reworked classical pieces like Khachaturian's Sabre Dance as a speed-crazed rock number or Georg Bizet's Farandole. After the split of the band he worked at the wall of sound in memory of Phil Spector. Then in the early 70s he turned into classic Rock and Roll. Since this time he publishes records in those he acts as the keeper of classical rock music. On his records he played a lot of twanging tunes. This one is a cover of Bill Murray's Trouble Boys, released in 1978 on Trax on Wax 4.

Enjoy and happy birthday Dave

What Happened To Pub Rock # 7

If we talk about pub rock and I have recently written about Nick Lowe, the name Dave Edmunds cannot be remained unmentioned. Dave Edmunds is a Welsh guitarist, singer and producer. Although he was named with pub rock and New Wave his natural leaning has always been leaning to 50s style an rock and roll. He's became known in the late 60s with his band Love Sculpture as he scored a hit by a cover from Khachaturian's Sabre Dance as a high speed-crazed rock number. He was always torn backwards and I know him as a type that was born 30 years too late. His next project was to make an album that would have a Phil Spector-sound. Subtle as a Flying Mallet could be a record that was produced by Phil Spector. Most of the instruments were played by Dave Edmunds and it is still a superb record. After this record he became linked with the pub rock movement in the early 1970s, producing Brinsley Schwarz, Ducks Deluxe and The Flamin' Groovies. One of his trademarks was using a stripped down, grittier sound mostly reduced to a leading guitar. In this time he started his collaboration with Nick Lowe and their band Rockpile. Until the 1980s they couldn't act as a band because they signed to different companies. Also the line-up on their solo records were nearly the same over the years. Dave Edmunds had several hits through the 1980s covering songs from Elvis Costello, Graham Parker and Nick Lowe. In the 1980s he produced acts carrying his musical influences into today like King Kurt and The Stray Cats.

What Happened To Pub Rock # 6

As I wrote on this series punk and new wave music had it roots in bands that used to play live pubs. One of those bands were Brinsley Schwarz named by their guitar player. Other members were Bob Andrews on keybords, Billy Rankin on drums an the magnificent Nick Lowe on bass and vocals. On their first records they played a kind of The Band inspired country with a little bluesy and pscychedelic touch. They got a bigger fanbase about playing a laid back country rock in later times. In the mid 1970s they played the backing band on Frankie Millers debut and started a collaboration with Dave Edmunds who produced their last records The New Favourites of Brinsley Schwarz which is the best one for me. After this record the band split and the members started solo careers or were found in other bands or as session musicians in the following years. Maybe their biggest legacy was one song written by Nick Lowe and made famous years later by Elvis Costello: What's so funny but peace love and understanding.

Brinsley Schwarz - Ballad of a has been beauty queen
Brinsley Schwarz - What's so funny about peace, love and understanding
Brinsley Schwarz - The look that's in your eye tonight

Although Brinsley Schwarz was named by their guitarist the mastermind of the band was Nick Lowe. He wrote the most songs - especially the ballads and his distinctive voice. He and Ian Gomm (who joined the original set up from the second record) started solo careers - but really successful was just Nick Lowe. According to my opinion he is the connecting piece to the new fresh upcoming music. He signed to the STIFF-label and his single So it goes was the first release of the label. In the following years he made some great records with very good ballads, songs with perfect hooks and he transported the power of Rock 'n' Roll into the upcoming punk and new wave era. The story of his collaboration with Dave Edmunds should be told another time.
