One Night in Bangkok

... yes we moved a couple of days ago to Bangkok to spend the new years eve in a big city and return to Sri Lanka again early 2013. Its the same thing like on any big airport. To get a transport to the city to a approbriate price. If you pass the passport control a lot of people offer you the service to transport you to the city - and most people choose one of them - not knowing, that they charge you three times. Go down to the second level and get on of the public taxi to carry you downtown.

After arriving at our hotel we're not amused to recognize that next door a hotel is completly renovated. After serveral diskussions with the manager we could change the room the other day. And after changing the room we are much more satisfied now.

The first afternoon/evening we drifted to local areas around. We found a nice spot to see the sun getting down behind the impressive skyline of upper Bangkok. After a couple of sundowners we are getting hungry and decided to go to the japanese restaurant close to our place. It was very traditional as we know from our visit in Japan four years ago. There are four pillows arround a very low table seperated from each other with some wooden walls. We ordered some small food and drunk the famous sake. It's a liqour made out of rice and it is really tasty (no headache the other day). So finally we had a good start in Bangkok.

The next day we took some sightseeing to show our friend the best places around. Although that he's a buddhist we as very impressed about What Poo. In the evening time we decided to go to Cowboy Soi. This is a very small road with all the bars where young girls dance on the tables. Watching them dance is horrible. No one of them is able to move her hips. It seems to me as they were all stoned. It is nice to see but not to stay for longer times. But we could bear it, watching the premier league live on telly.

So now the year is nearly over and I wish you all a very good start into 2013. May be the best what happened to you this year may be the worst in 2013.

This is one of my favourite tunes from Talk Talk. For me it is a very emotional version from Bon Iver (I think it is live in Glasgow)

Bon Iver - I believe in you (Talk Talk Cover)

The other one is also a favourite of mine. Back in the very early 80s to a sound that's called Pub Rock. Classical handmade music.

Unavoidable

are the three-wheelers most known as Tuc Tuc. On all main- and backstreets you can see them riding around. In no place you are save from the crackling noise of that litte mortorcycles dfriven by a two-stroke engine. Everyone takes them for short distances and you can them often overloadet (as europeans would like to think).

These vehicles are very well known in Thailand and also in India but established in Sri Lanka only 25 years ago. It's easy to take a ride because you don't need air conditioning because most of them are open on both sides. It's the cheapest way to take shorter distances. For longer distances I'll prefer a tax or a bus.

But anyway to travel on the road takes a lot of time. There is only one highway that connects the capitol to the south. And if you take the regular streets you have to be careful about the other things on the street: the busses, trucks, cars, tuc tucs, dogs, cows, bicycles, pedestrians and sometimes deep hole in the street.

Have a good time and enjoy the rest of the year.

Buses and baksheesh

We decided to stay at new years eve in Bangkok. Because we wanted to invite a clos friend to usto join we had to move to Colombo. If a local resident wants to travel he has to fulfill a lot of requierments. Passport and so on is not the real problem - the main problem is that the government wants to be shure, that this person will return to his home country. To run the application process sucessful it take normal a couple of weeks - even when its close to christmas. So what to do? It is like all over the world: we got information about a friend, who knows someone that knows someone woh might be abble to fix the application process in a short time. And therefore he took a little cash in his pockets.

Our local stay is in the very south of Sri Lanke and we startet our trip with a local bus, crowded with a lot of locaal people. After a 40 minute ride we arrived Galle, where we could chance to a long distance bus to Colombo. This one was more comfortable, air-conditioned and with tv. The whole ride they played videos from mostly local bands and also inevitable PSY with his gangnam style. After a couple of songs I grabbed y headphones out of my bag and listend to my kind of music.

After we finished our baksheesh deal and booking our flights we stayed for some more hours in Colombo in a very nice outdoor-pub and take afterwords the train back to our local stay. We asked some guys the time the train will leave so we can acdording our drinks to this time. We arrived the train exactly but what we didn't aksed how long the travel will take until we arrive. To our bad luck we catched a train that stops in every small village along the way. After three hours we arrived in Galle again to wait for the next bus to take us home. Finally we arrived at 1:00 a.m. and fell in our beds quickly.

The next day was reserved to recreate again.

The last post ... if we believe the words

Everybody's talking nowadays about the forecoming end of our planets. Even the local papers edit a eight side extra in their dayly newspaper about what would happen or not. We also discussed about it and what different websites will tell us. I think it is another hype - remember what they told us at the end of the last century. And what happend - nothing. The only things that happend, was that my team won the german championship in football and played in the Champions leage. Also positive was, that the new century brougt us some real good music and opend my ears to new sounds.

So people - what ever will happen: it is a good reason to have a party to watch the forecoming day.
Have fun, enjoy some drinks - I'll go to the beach, get us some drinks and listen to some music I burned while I wrote this post. Cheers

Sons and Daughters - Dance me in
Joe Strummer - Get down Moses

PS: Could this be the soundtrack for the end of the world as we know it?

I'm four and a half hour ahead - I let you know, when something happens

Recreation: The Singha style

Recreation for working people means getting a couple of days off from work. Here it is normally that you work for six days to have one day free to do things of your own pleasure. Also a lot of people work in places that was located a long distance from their hometown. So it could happen that one friend you know from former days appears suddenly to your place and you decide to spent some time with him talking, drinking and eating. Whilst they talk and drink they decide to phone to some other friends to join them.

That's what happend to us last sunday. I got a call from a good friend to join their party a we went off to get a TukTuk to ride us to the next town to join them. As we arrived, allready six people where sitting on the porch - each of them a glass of arrack with lime infront. Arrack is a local liqour and you can compare it to a brandy. It's very tasty and you won't have headache the next day.

If one bottle is empty they call a TukTuk-driver to get the next bottle, some cigaretts and some litte food (grilled fish, coconut-pieces and some sweet stuff). Sometimes it takes a longer time untill the driver brings the next round because he hadn't so much money with, so that he just had to find someone who borrows him some money. And this game goes on and on and on until they decide that it's time to finish.

We had a very funny afternoon there. We were treated like we know them all for a long time. It's still amazing to have people around who are allways open hearted. Sure: they are also proud to have us around. By the way I recognized, that this men's thing - all femals were in the background, telling no words until the party is over. I guess this will never happen in western hemisphere.

This one is from the lovely Maria McKee.In the eighties she did the lead vocals in a band called The Lone Justice. They did a raw mixture of Country, Rock and Punk called CowPunk. It was an american band, but her roots are irish and at the age of 19 she wrote the song Feargal Sharkey made famous - a good heart.

Enjoy and have a good time

It's Cricket-time

Now we arrived at least. I allways need one or two days in a new country to sort myself, to have a first look what's going on, where are fixed places to remember and so on. After a relaxing day at the beach and swimming in the sea we were invited by a local family for lunch.

I am everytime impressed how hospitable these people are. Beeing poor and inviting some foreigners for dinner makes me thinking about these in my country. It will be not the same than here. People at my place wouldn't be that warm, open hearted and friendly as these people are.

After lunch our friend Rins took us to a local cricket tournament. I know that this game is very popular in Southern Asia and in Australia. But I had never got the chance to watch a whole game or play it by myseve. In this case Rins told my the main rules of the game. He also told me what's a wicket, a batsman and a bowler are. That's made it easier to watch the game. We watched several innings until the team of Rins has to play in the tournament. I dont't know the reasons, but they had a very bad day and sucked. None of them was angry about losing the tournament - maybe because it is their nature to play just for fun. I don't know  - the main thing is, that we had an interesting afternoon.

Here's a song from a band I love for several years. Only guitars and the drum machine - songs they are so raw and pure. Essential if you stick to Rock 'n' Roll.

After a long journey

This is my second day here in Sri Lanka and now I've time to hang out for aa while. Our journey started with a lot of complications on the airport. First we had to wait for 90 minutes on the runway to pick up some passengers from other flight. This was the reason why we missed the connection flight. So we had to stay five more hours in Doha with nothing else to do than wait. Finally we arrived in Colombo mor than seven hours later as planed.

The best thing traveling on a plane nowaday is, that you can choose from a lot of actual movies. I took three of them an most I was impressed by Abraham Lincoln Vampire hunter. It is such a crazy story about the reason of strating the civil war in USA. The story tells us, that the southern states are occupied by vampires and that they tried to rule whole America. And therfore Abe Lincoln started to fight against them - killing most of them with his silvered axe. It is a long time ago since a watched a vampire movie - and I have to say it made fun at this time and location.

Our friend was already waiting to pick us up and carry us to our destination down south to Mirissa. After visiting his family and checking in to our guesthouse we went out for something to drink. After a couple of beers we decited to visit our friends brother in law at his boat in the harbour. It was his last day off before he goes out fishing again. What meas, that he'll be away for three or four weeks fishing near the Adaman sea. Therefore a bunch of fisherman sat on the boat having a party. They invited us to join their party. The only drinks you could get there was brandy with lemonade. What the hell - they drank so fast I can't believe and I did my best to survive. After all it was a funny evening and we got a couple of new friends.

After a day of relaxing I am able now to get on the blog again and see what is new. Now I prepair to go to the beach and check out the waves in the sea.

So have a good weekend people

My bags are packed and I'm ready to go

Yes it's true - no more going to work for this year. Tomorrow we will start our journey to Sri Lanka. Expecting nothing than visiting our friends there, having a good time and relax, reading some novels and also watching the sundown with a cold beer by my side.

I've visited this country in January this year and was so impressed of the people and the country itself. Now all words are spoken right now. I will keep my blog alive while I am in Sri Lanka.

So I thought, the right song to start the holiday is an old one from the eighties

Enjoy time and have fun

Back on the blog

I took myself a break from posting and following my favorite blogs, because I was busy at office and preparing my vacation. Next Tuesday me and Christiane will leave for Sri Lanka. We'll stay there for nearly four weeks - maybe we take a short trip to Thailand from there. I am so glad to get away from cold, rain and snow. The next days will be also filled with little things to do until we leave an visit some people to say good bye and wishing them a merry Christmas a good start into the next year.

Even if I am a long way from home, I try to keep this blog alive.

As I wrote the title of this post I wanted to publish a song by the great Quincey Jones called 'Back on the block' but I decided to give you a song that impressed me yesterday while I was taking the train to my job. It's a song by Sinnead O'Conner I took from a collection of her rare tracks. Just the lady and her voice telling us another story of a love gone waste.

Enjoy and have a good weekend my dears

But now you have gone and your prejustice wont keep you warm tonight

No, I didn't lost my love - but the last days I was in mood to listen to one of the best bands ever. Actual most songs of The Smiths tell us about feelings when you lost your love, feeling lonely and you couldn't see a light at the end of the tunnel. Most of the times I felt sad, the songs of The Smiths helped me finding my way back in a brighter life. Although knowing, that there is someone who felt the same way.

Enjoy and have a good day

Let's start the week with another song that tell us, what could happen if your love leaves you. A catchy tune from a band also long gone.

Thanksgiving

Just came back from an invitation to a traditional thanksgiving diner. The boss of my brother in law Ed invited us to his family and some friends. Let's face the rest of the working week

Here's a track that I can't get out of my head for hours. I remember when this song was published in 2003 it was one of the favorite tunes I heard all summer long. Most of the songs for Depeche Mode was written from Martin Gore. Because songs from Dave Gahan had no chance to get on records like 'Ultra' or 'Exciter' he decided to make a solo record. Not the greatest record that year but still a catchy tune.

Enjoy and have a good week

Exploring the archive

A couple of weeks ago I got a comment from my brother on a post including the link to Dirks homepage. The next day I searched my archive for his music - but I couldn't find the tracks. I was certain that the song must me on my hard drive (maybe with a different tab). After searching for hours I send an E-Mail to my brother to give me the songs again. He answered me, that gave it to me on a CD. After that I recognized where I have to search. At least I found it an made a copy on my hard drive.

Mr. Darmstaedter traveled in his younger days with his guitar all over Europe by train, play on the streets to get some money. After returning back to Germany he started to form a band called The Jeremy Days who entered the German single charts back in 1988 with 'Brand New Toy'

After a several years of playing the band shut down and Dirk started a single career. He released several records on his own name and also as Me and Cassity.

The songs I searched in my archive was a compilation of songs that was records live in studio, in living rooms and other locations. Some with a small band - some just the artist and his guitar. They were formerly postet on his homepage and called 'the original podcasts'. Some songs he wrote himself - others are inspired covers of songs from the last decades.

For me, he's a wonderful singer/songwriter - worth to listen.

Enjoy and have a good weekend

Sandy

Hi everyone out there,

since two days I watch what happens over the atlantic ocean in the United States of America. There's a terrible storm moving toward the eastcoast. I can imagine what it means for the people, because a couple of month I saw some alike in Florida. Tons of rain, streets full of water and houses without electricity. The most people who will suffer are those who haven't enough money. New York without any electricity - this must be so horrible. I wonder how many people will take the chance to plunder the stores. But anyway - I feel with the people on the eastcoast. But don't forget the people who make the same experiences in the carribean sea. Nobody recognize them - just because they have no TV showing the pain on their islands.

Keeping it Peel

Eight years ago since the best DJ ever died. I think is is not necessary to lose more words about him and his place in history of modern/independent music. All words about him are said - open your ears for new music.

A very good overview is understandable with the help of his legendary sessions. Therefor and to give him a monument the BBC created a homepage.

One of my favorite is dated from 1980 by the Dexy's Midnight Runners. I still love their power and giving back the horns to Rock 'n' Roll.

Cornered the boy kicked out at the world - the world kicked back a lot fucking harder now

Hi,

JC from The Vinyl Villain posted that it is 10 years ago Pete Doherty appeard in the musical scene. Most people might know him from excesses while he was hammered or on drugs. Less people - especially in Germany - know about his lyrical possibilities. He made some songs with different bands or alone, that will be still in my mind.

Songs the Lord taught us Pt. 3

Hi,

made today a lazy day at home, watching television and working on my blog. Before I leave to watch one of my favorite football team I give you some early songs from the eighties.

Every time I hear these songs I remember the days of our youth, where we did what we did and listened to any kind of music. One of my favorites was Tenpole Tudor - a small band with only two or three smash hits in the British charts. Still simple but anyway easily to hear beside (especially to drink a beer by).

Listen and enjoy

Rebel yell: Europe has received the Nobel prize for peace

Hi,

About one week ago the European Union has received the Nobel peace prize. As a reason it was called to us that the European Union and her precursors more than 60 years have protected away the war in Europe. It is right that there was no more war since the second world war in Western Europe and that with the death of the fascistic leaders in Europe a sort of democracy in these countries move has held.

If I think about the reasons for this long time without war, I think that the reasons lies for this in the prosperity which has entered after the world war in middle europe. In addition, is the post-war generation has become more and more hedonistic. Not to forget, the technical achievements and the possibilities to travel around the world have a decisive portion that no more other war has broken out.

How fragile this peace is, we have seen when former Yugoslavia has burnt and the ethnic groups with shining hatred and murder desire have met. And now my question: Where was Europe at this time? What does Europe undertake in the today's time if in many member states minorities call themselves to word and demand more sovereignty?

I don't know the answer exactly and I finish now with politics.
Have a nice weekend people

Viv Albertine // The Slits

Hi people,

a few days ago I have read a post from Swiss Adam, about Viv Albertine. He featured a new clip from the former member of the Slits. I was astonished that she's still in the scene and making music. I agree to him, that is nearly impossible to be close to mid 50's and looking this way.

I love to her her songs and I hope you too. This one is an really old one - a traditional soul tune from Marvin Gaye performed by the Slits in their lo-fi punk attitude.

Songs The Lord taught us Pt. 1

Hi,

I have indicated that I put in future subject-related Posts. Here I will introduce some songs which lie to me very much with the heart or which have always accompanied me during the last years.

I talked with my brother in law Ed this weekend and he told me about a ranking list in the United states of America of the best southern fried rock songs ever. The number one song was a great tune from the Marshall Tucker Band called 'Cant't you see'. For me it is one of my favorite love songs ever. Not even for love - but what a woman can make out of a man.

So listen and enjoy!

The Marshall Tucker Band - Can't you see

Rebel Yell: Catalania is not spain

Hi,
tonight there will be one more time the classico in spanish football between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. What is new is the fact, that the supportes of Barcelona will demonstrate for more autonomy for the catalonians. I don't know, if it is because of the so called Euro-crisis or not. But I shure know, that the same effort becoming more autonomy was one of the main reasons for starting spanish civil war.

What happened there is also a dark side of german history. All the fascist leaders of europe supported the fascist nationalist general Franko. Remember Legion Condor an their horrible bombing of Guernica.

What is seldom told, is that in these war fought a lot of men from all over Europe to support the spanish people in their fight against the fascist. They are known as the international socialist brigades.

This song remains of them and give them a musical memorial.

Listen, enjoy and have a good week.
Christy Moore - Viva la quinta brigada

Rebel yell

Hi,

I want to try to bring a little structure in my Blog and will publish in future in irregular distances subject-related posts. I would like to start with a post which I call Rebel Yell. I have lately found out that I have quite a lot of songs on my computer which have on the one hand a concrete political relation or denounce, on the other hand, social mismanagement. And just these songs I hear since several months increasingly.

Let me start with an traditional. This is a song about the true side of the war, where there are no heroes, but only victims.

The facts of life

Hi,
I just looked at the Champions League game Manchaster City against Borussia Dortmund and cannot still calm down about the wrongfully given penalty. But thus just functions football. There will always be a referee who sees the determining situation different than the fans of the respective team would have with pleasure.

Anyway - trouble won't last long. I give you a song by Blackbox Recorder to get cool with me.

Pump up the volume

Hi,

o slowly it becomes on the work again a little quiet and I come more relaxed to lives. I am invited later with a good friend to a small celebration. Occasion is that she has started her professional training 25 years ago. On the way home I have thought to myself what I have made in 1987 which music was in the charts and which event was decisively for this year.

The main thing I still remember was political mole scandal. The German politician Uwe Barschel  has spied on his political challenger and died short time later in mysterious manner.

In music it was the big time for Stock, Aitken, Waterman. I still remember M|A|R|S|S with all their samples and that awesome sound. I think it also stood the test of time.

Rip it up

Hi,

I'm back on my blog after a period of laziness. Before I go out for dinner with a good girlfriend of mine I will leave you with a song from the great Orange Juice. I think it was from their second record. There are so many hymns sung from other bloggers out there (particularly from Scotland). Prominent, on this occasion, is The Vinyl Villain. Really worth to follow.

What's so funny bout peace, love and understanding

Hi,

back from some hard days at the office. Not that I have too much work, but I have to work through so many new things and I have also to represented my colleague who is gone for some weeks on vacation.

Therefore I spent an evening on the couch, surf the Internet a bit, listen to some music and have casually keep an eye on the Champions League. Not that I'm a fan of Bayern Munich, but if even a German team plays internationally, I will continue to to support them.

As I previously viewed the news, I had to think, in what times we live. Just rotate through all? The Middle East is in turmoil, Muslims are calling for war and I wonder where all this will end yet. If we internalize the three words from the title, we were on a good step towards a better future.

Therefore one of my favorites in a live version

If we at it, then I put on yet another song from the past.

Enjoy and have a good time.

Los ninos del parque

Hi,
just came back from my weekly meeting with our friends. Had a funny evening with talking, laughing, gambling - all together called fun. Just got a flashback to the mid eighties and the german so called Neue Deutsche Welle (New Wave). One of my favorites in this time were Liaisons Dangerous. It has an hypnotic groove that stood the test of time. In my mind one of the first acid-house track, before it's even called acid house.
Have a drink and enjoy.

Working week ahead

Hi there,
weekend is nearly over and we can start a new week working. Had me a peaceful weekend watching football, listen to music, searching the internet and relaxing. So I can start the forthcoming week very easily, because I am satisfied on my own with no worries on my back. Therefore let's pick up some tune I hear so often when I'm on myself.

Not the origin version by the Clash - just a very good version from a french band, who covered a lot of great 80th tunes in a special jazzy style.

Listen, enjoy and have a good week
Nouvelle Vague  Guns of Brixton

Hold on

Hold on
It is sunday again, my baby is out for vacation and I have some time to relaunch my blog. This is just a test to check out sharing files with the community. I chose a song, that I do not bring out of my head recently. It is from the Alabama Shakes, taped on a live session for an American Network.

A new day

Hi,

it's a new day and I'm ready for a new post. I spent a couple of hours with a very good friend on my balcony smoking, drinking and philosophize about life, relationship and some more essential things. Now I'll finish with some heavy stuff from Spaceman 3. Still love this song, because it's so simple but very impressive.

FIFA World Cup 2016 Qualifiers

Hi,

the qualifiers for the next FIFA World Cup started last Friday. Tomorrow there will be another classic game between Austria and Germany again. Of course the germans will be the favorite, but I still remeber a match 36 years ago at the FIFA World cup in Argentine, where the Austrian beat our ass in a shameful way. This were our feelings in this time, but in these days I can smile about our thoughts of a time long gone.

This is what wikipedia tells from this game:
For the Austrian team, it was all "for the honor", even if a significant victory against Germany would become only one third in the group. A victory over world champions Germany would therefore had for the Austrian team, especially a symbolic meaning in terms of the rivalry between the neighboring countries. It would also be a late revenge for the 1:6 defeat in the semifinal of the soccer World Cup in 1954 and the first international soccer match victory against Germany have been for over 40 years, because in many statistics can be found as the last victory that Austria could previously achieve against Germany 5-0 in a friendly match on 13 September 1931. But actually took on 3 April 1938. After connecting during the Nazi era, the so-called "game port", "Ostmark" against "Old Reich", at which the number before the dissolution of the team's Austrian won 2-0.
For the then German coach Helmut Schön was clear that this game would be eligible for early retirement to be his last. Even before he certified his title defending team, "not a championship format" have to, and announced that it will retire after the World Cup.

Discussed in the German media, there was little doubt about the success of the DFB team, was only whether the need for a well-finals rout was possible. Lazy sunday afternoon

Sommer ist back in germany. It ist to hot to go outside yet - maybe in the later afternoon to enjoy some cool drinks in the beergarden. I was searching the internet for a couple of hours and listen music. One of my favourits for hot nights is a brilliant song from Jimmy Buffet. In my place he had never had the success he deserved.

First steps

Hi there,

these are my first steps as a blogger. Please have some indulgence, that some things will not grammatically perfectly reproduced. After a busy week I relaxe with the creation of this blog. The name of the blog is inspired by Jeb Loy Nichols former Band the Fellow Travellers. It was there second record published in 1992. I still remember their gig in Stuttgart on an incredible hot sunday evening. There were only two dozen people watching the concert but the band did a very good job. I can't remember any other concert being that peaceful and relaxed.
