Fehlfarben Again

In addition to my yesterday's post I got the news that Fehlfarben will release their new album these days. I found some snippets on Soundcloud and this video on youtube. What I heard was a more relaxed version of their former sound. Still having that deep new wave bass and the typical guitar licks. And singer Peter Hein is still an angry man, complaining about the things he don't like in this world.

This man above is the very young Josef Stalin in the times he was revolutionary - times before he turned into a mass-murder.

What Do I get?

Yesterday I was out with my former wife into some pubs we used to frequent often. We met a lot of people we used to stay with them for a longer/less time during the last decades. It was funny to talk to them after a few years and we had a real good time. When I came home I had a little blues and I played myself a couple of songs from decades long gone by. I don't know why but I was in the mood to listen to Fehlfarben a band from the late 70s that mean a lot to me. They made maybe the definitive sound of the German punk/new wave. Inspired by the British groups in this era they were heroes to us  because they formulated what we thought (I hope Dirk will agree). Paul ist tod is the main statement for our generation.

What I want to have I do not agree and what I cannot get like to me. I would like to get what I to what I am dreaming of.

It's reduced to a pinball game. Paul means that you play pinball with two persons, one on the right and one on the left. And finally it means, that playing together is over right now.

The World Is Dub Enough

These days I listen a lot to dub and reggae. It's this kind of music to slow down and relax. One of my favorite bands playing dub is located in Switzerland and is maybe known by their crazy dub versions of songs by The Clash. I follow their career for years but never get a chance to see them live. Anyway, this is not the time to complain - it's time to play their music. This one is a classic for them. Deep bass added with a lot of echo and some superb accents on organ and guitar.

As said, the were known by their versions of classic tunes they surprised with their last years record. It's called Burroughs in DUB and features Burroughs himself talking over a dub motive. For those who don't him, he was the godfather of the so called beat generation. In his early years he got addicted to drugs and was out in South America in search of a drug called yaga. Then he turned to Europe and Morocco where he completed his well known works Naked Lunch and Junkie. In the late 60s/early 70s he got in contact with new artists like Andy Warhol, Mick Jagger, Dennis Hopper and Patti Smith in  New York. This song is based on Burroughs' tour as spoken performance artist in the mid 90s.

Whole Wide World

Since a couple of weeks I have a contract in a local gym to do something for my old bones and body. Never thought that it could make fun to do the exercise course. It's a good feeling to take a shower after workout. A few days ago this song shuffled on my mobile phone when I sat on the bicycle ergometer in the gym. I'm sure most of you know this song by Wreckless Eric thinking his version is the final one. I don't know where I got this file/version from, neither were or when it was recorded but for me it on the same level. Massive guitars playing the chords, the drums make a perfect beat and Mr. Costello sing the verses with his very special voice.

Twanging Tuesday # 84

The Godfathers are one of those underrated bands that played the right music at the wrong time. Formed in the late 70s as an alternative /new wave band with strong influences from rhythm and blues and punk they played a very guitar dominated music. Maybe this kind of music was not hip enough in times when electronic music dominated the days. Anyway this rockabilly influenced song from their seldom named record More songs of love and hate (with a fantastic cover showing Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor) is a nugget.

!!!

A few weeks ago Chk Chk Chk (!!!) released a new record. This New York based band is around since the late 90s and made some unsettled music many people didn't know how to handle. Deeply based in the tradition of late New Wave they added funky guitars to theirs sound. Throughout the years they got infected by dancefloor and house music. This song would be on a disc I would compile for a longer ride in the car.

Enjoy and have a good week.

Beyonder Girl

Now, finally, I have one-week vacation. No appointments, meetings and project works more for the next days. When I take a look at the development in the bank I work in I come to the knowledge that a lot develops to the negative. More and more jobs are stroked, departing employees are not substituted any more and the work is distributed to less and less employee. A part of my work consists in defining the work routines to this change anew and introducing them. A lot would be easier if was available according to time for the introduction. But, as usual, everything should function immediately. Often I came home after ten, twelve hours working and have no muse to continue my blog.

Todays track is the newest release by Austrian electronic artists Sofa Surfers. The band exists since 1997 and their music is hard to describe. Hardly influenced by Dub and Techno they added over the years elements of downbeat and Trip Hop to their sound. Beyonder Girl a dark track, menacingly, lascivious. From the track there penetrates a brisk, almost quite bigbeat-like rock energy, at the same time he emits a sensitivity, above all transported by the song. Wildly combination, deep, down and dirty.

Barefoot Through The Shards

A few weeks ago I started with a co-worker a little pub-hopping in Stuttgart after work. We hit some local hot spots. Later this evening we stumbled into a concert from a local punk band in a very small venue in Stuttgart. It was not the music that my co-worker usually listen to but for me it was enlightenment. Seldom heard a band playing post punk/post New Wave in my local era. Deeply based in the bass-dominated sound of Joy Division with noisy guitars and pressed out lyrics. I really love their new record and I think it will company throughout the next month.

Give them a listen and enjoy.

This is another song from their latest record that is worth to listen

Twanging Tuesday # 83

It's not a true twanging tune but it is one of my beloved rockabilly tunes. Released almost 50 years ago it is still a song that is still a mark in this kind of genre. Less artists could give the feeling of a man coming home after a long time to his beloved one. I know that I post it in a sentimental mood - but anyway it is a great song and it is still a pleasure to listen to it from time to time.

Get your face all pretty and your hair done right
Cause we're gonna do the town tonight
Well I'm comin' into town and right on time I still got your lovin' on my mind

I'm a coming home I gotta make some love
I'm a coming home sweet turtle dove
I'm a coming home to make sweet love to you

Well I see down the road there's a big truck stop
They got a pretty little waitress with the carrot top
She's pretty as a doll pretty as can be
But don't you worry honey she ain't nothin' to me

I'm a coming home I gotta make some love
I'm a coming home sweet turtle dove
I'm a coming home to make sweet love to you

Well I came to a hill and the truck looked down
Throwed in low and she's huggin' the ground
Scratchin' gears but I'm goin' again I'm comin' home baby I'm doggin' it in

I'm a coming home I gotta make some love
I'm a coming home sweet turtle dove
I'm a coming home to make sweet love to you

Get your face all pretty and your hair done right
Cause we're gonna do the town tonight
Well I'm comin' into town right on time I still got your lovin' on my mind

I'm a coming home I gotta make some love
I'm a coming home sweet turtle dove
I'm a coming home to make sweet love to you

Melody Lane

Sometimes you are surprised when you listen to a new band. I've never heard about Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats before. I expected from this Cambridge based band nothing more than classic British guitar music. From the start of the record I felt like years back in time when bands like Black Sabbath was played. These four guys also reveal themselves on the topical album The Night Creeper as a magician who conjure one or other catchy tune by monotonous repeating of the melodic sombre reef which cite the doom of the seventy-year-olds with pleasure. The weight-bearing basic riff are varied in the course of the rather long songs marginal, but to let arise just enough, in order no boredom, sometimes the bass breaks out, sometimes a guitar plays solo in the background. The amazing is present that one reaches an extremely high recognition value already thus without succinct song. Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats means steadily flow without evident outbreaks of violence, but under the surface it ferments gloomily and menacingly. But while a lot of bands walk to the cemetery at night when the crypt is open, the Uncle rather turn to the stoned hippies who dance between the gravestones.

Give It Time

Back in 1986 The Woodentops released Giant, one of the best records in these days. Over the years I listened often to the music they made. Rolo McGinty made timeless music and it seems that it is music that could be remixed in a very good way even decades later. It's a drifty, percussion stamped little peace of music.

Big Hard Excellent Fish

JC featured Pete Whylie yesterday on his terrific blog. For me, Pete Whylie is one of the most underrated artists in the post punk/new wave era. What ever he did, he made it with great empathy and he was always open for something new. Watching his career go for JC's page. Reading his post it inspired me to post a song which he released as Big Heart Excellent Fish. Imperfect List is one of these songs when they appear to me I get into a sentimental mood. Most of the words that was spoken touches my heart and I ask myself why is the world that it is now. You can add to the lyrics of this song what happened the last years. IS, refugees, war in middle east, unemployment, health service,  ... It will ever be an unfinished list. So sad about it - but it's the fact of life we have to bare.

Lee Again

It is a long time ago since I featured Lee Hazlewood at this place. I don't know exactly the reason why I love his music. Maybe because of his smooth voice, maybe because the words he sung, maybe because of his old fashioned mustard. Anyway, sometimes in the mood to play his records and his songs bring me to a level that fits a lot to me. It is an artist that many of us should listen to to sometimes.

Low-Fi

Yesterday The Swede featured the superb low-fi songs of Birds of Hell that made me remind to another artist that was close to this kind of music. Billy Childish is one of these artists that plays his kind of music for long long years. Making less compromises in his way of music. Listening to Birds of Hell I came back to a collaboration Billy Childish did a few years ago with Holly Golightly. It's good to hear these songs again and not a too bad start into the new week.

And this is another song by Holly that I've almost forgotten.

Get Right

I found this song over at Austrian radio station. Maybe one of the less stations playing different music and far away from mainstream. This time they surprised me featuring a song from Arcade Fire that is not typical for them. It's a rough blues rock number with a weired combination of falsetto voice and a blues guitar. Dark, dirty and sexy.

Stoke The Fire

James Young & Aiden Whalley aka Darkstar are a British electronic duo. With her topical album „Foam of Iceland“ Whalley and Young lift her subtle machine sound on a new level: Between broken, digital, but also organically to pumping beats and stoic playing synthesizers conversation admissions are to be heard often. Friends, neighbours and also the band unknown people from her hometown, the northern English Huddersfield, were invited to deliver statements to her life reality and the political situation in England. This song is a danceable, catchy update of R'n'B and urbane soul.

Idjut Boys

The London based DJ/producer duo Idjut Boys release a new record these days after their debut a few years ago. They reworked some material they from throughout their career. It consists chilled-out Balearic sound, smooth electric and acoustic guitars, pianos, bongos and rubbery basslines. All together mixed in thick hallucinatory echoes and dub. One of the most relaxed albums of this year.

Don't Breath Out

I am not rally into Hip Hop but sometimes a song from this genre comes around that is more than average. Roots Manuva is a Jamaican born rapper from London. I know him from various collaborations he did during the last years especially All Alone on Gorillaz. This is the first release from his newest album that will be released this month. It is a soulful song with a lot of violins including a sample from Barry White's Honey Please, Can't you see.

Enjoy and have a good week.

Ha Howa Ha Howa

Maybe one of the craziest ideas these days was transfered to reality. Bat for Lashes' Natasha Khan, TOY and producer Dan Carey teamed to form Sexwitch to cover a bunch of early 60 psychedelic songs from Iran, Thailand and Morocco. The lyrics from the originals were transfered into English and the songs were recorded in almost one day. The result is nothing more than something magic and hard to describe music. Based on a permanent drums in the foreground some guitar and organ prepare the ground for Natasha's voice that reminds me sometimes to Siouxie Sioux. All in all music you can get addicted to.

Geisterfahrer

Back in 1979 when punk swapped over to Germany a band formed in Hamburg by the name of Geisterfahrer (wrong-way driver). They really had the spirit of punk. As far as I know they played live a kind of electronic noise that the local punks in Hamburg switched off the electricity. But they made a few records at this time that I used to play the recent days. It's a sound hardly inspired by Joy Division with a pumping bass, cryptic lyrics and a voice the would become good to some dark wave bands.

Band of Susans

This is another forgotten band from the late 80s. Their first full length album Hope Against Hope impressed me much in these days. They made a wonderful melange of guitar based rock with an attitude far away from most of the other bands in this era. I loved this band being in the orbit of noise-rock bands like post No Wave bands like Sonic Youth and The Swans. Still fresh, heavy guitars and maybe ahead of the times.
