Monday's Long Song

Five years ago, Can began releasing a small series of live recordings. The first was Can Live In Stuttgart 1975. It was originally recorded by a fan using a Sony Walkman hidden in his trouser pocket. This fan had collected more than 100 live recordings of the band from that period. Irmin Schmidt has now restored these bootlegs and released them as a triple-LP set. These are exclusively instrumental tracks, but they do demonstrate the possibilities available to Can at that time. On Zwei, one can hear melodic guitar lines, a sweeping organ, Jaki Liebezeit’s metronomic drumming and lively bass lines. As the track progresses, the guitar jams become increasingly emotional, and the song ultimately culminates in a psychedelic space-rock sound that Hawkwind might well have played.
