Run Daddy Run

Weekends over and another working week ahead. This week C. will come back from Sri Lanka to watch out what's to be done in the next weeks. For me it's just another busy week ahead in which I don't know what problems in our projects I should be work. Anyway, let's start this week with a song from Fun Lovin' Criminals a New York based band who plays a fantastic mixture of alternative rock, hip hop, funk, blues and jazz. As a band, they cover such issues as organized crime, recreational drug use, violence, poverty and politics. Their songs are often gritty or existentialist in nature, but are just as often humorous or satirical. One of my favorites is Run, Daddy, Run which shows their abilities maybe the best. It's a very good mixture of the styles I described.

The Touch Of Your Lips

Today's track is by a wonderful voice from Greece. Nana Mouskouri began to sing at the age of 12 listening to radio broadcasts of singers such as Frank Sinatra, Edith Piaf, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. In the early 1950s she studied classical music at the Conservatoire learning to be able singing operas. At the end of the decade she started singing Jazz in nightclubs with a great repertoire of songs by Ella Fitzgerald. In 1962, she met Quincy Jones, who persuaded to her to travel to NYC to record an album of American jazz standards. This track is from this album 'The Girl from Greece Sings', a superb record that shows what a great voice could be able to when she gets the right producer and a perfect bunch of musicians to play with. A timeless piece of music for later in the evening.

George Duke 1946 - 2013

George Duke, an American musician, singer, composer and producer died last Monday on chronic lyphotytic leukemia. He was most known as a jazz musician but he felt also at home playing rock or pop music. So he playe on serveral records keyboards durching the 1970s in Frank Zappas Mothers of Invention. He also collaborated with musicians like Jean-Luc Ponty, Stanley Clarke, Billy Cobham, Cannonball Adderley, George Clinton, Anita Baker and Mike Manierie. He also produced some tracks on Miles Davis album 'Tutu' and the song from his cousin Denise Williams 'Let's hear it for the boys'. Daft Punk sampled his 'I love you more' for their song 'Digital love'. In the late 1970s he made his crossover-funk album 'Brazilian love affair' and opened some pop-used ears for latin sound.
