Black Coffee In Bed

It seems a little bit seldom when Susanna Hoffs appear on this pages only when she had released another album with cover versions. Not that she had a great appearance with her band The Bangles in the mid 80's but she went off my radar when the band split. The Bangles/Hoffs were one of those (girl-)bands that had the power of post-punk and the abilities to transform them into the best pop-songs in this decade. She started her solo-career with two albums that wasn't really bad but no ones to remember. She came back to my mind when she started her collaboration with Matthew Sweet and the series Under The Cover running for three albums until 2013. They've chosen songs from various decades spanning from the 60's to the 80's and all of them I enjoyed when they were released. And now she's back with The Deep End another album filled with cover versions spanning from Billie Eilish and Squeeze to the Rolling Stones. Not her best album with cover versions but if you like her voice like me she can't fail.

As said once before, the best thing in cover-versions is that you remember the originals. So it is with Black Coffee In Bed another terrific song by Squeeze the masters of turning short stories into pop-songs.

Under Covers

80s Revival Revived By Bangles' Susanna Hoffs And Matthew Sweet On ...

Yesterday Charity Chic had the same idea like me to feature the works of Susanna Hoffs and Matthew Sweet on this little corner of the internet. I can't add more words as that I really like their cover versions and their journey through music history. Some might say that the originals are much better but this doesn't matter. They just picked songs they like and do that on their very own way. Often close to the originals but always like they could be songs of their own. You can hear that they had fun recording these songs and every song that makes me happy is a good song.

On The Line

Bildergebnis für jenny lewis singer

Strong female voices hat always a huge attraction to me and it started when I listened the first time to Janis Joplin. After her I constantly like to listen to female singer(songwriter until now. To name them all would be too much for this short post. A few days ago I got aware that American actress and musician Jenny Lewis released a new album On The Line and I like her country inspired pop record. The songs are sometimes brittle like Stevie Nicks, playful like Kate Bush and poppy like Susanna Hoffs. Not the album of the year but some to come back from time to time. On her last record cover she was also topless with a jacket. Now she's wearing an evening dress with a deep décolleté and I ask myself what will be the next?
