Clap Your Hands

1981 The Clash released Sandinista a triple album on which they explored the full spectrum of their musical influences. On The Magnificent Seven, they incorporated rap, which was just coming into fashion at the time. The funky bass loop is still absolutely brilliant.

From there, it’s only a short step to the Sugarhill Gang, who made rap mainstream with Rapper’s Delight in 1979.

One of Yussuf’s biggest hits from back when he was still known as Cat Stevens.

Monday's Long Song

Bildergebnis für sugarhill gang

It is 40 years ago when I first got contact to new black music. Sugarhill Gang and rap was new to me and many friends of mine in these days. Most of had had problems with new fantastic music swapping over from Great Britain and no ears for Rapper's Delight. For me it was a little miracle that in NYC is growing something new and spectacular. Looking back in history, this song may opened many ears for following artists like Grandmaster Flash and the Beastie Boys as well. A classic tune, worth be featured at this place as well.

Rapper's Deutsch

CC from Charity Chic Music posted last week Rapper's Delight by Sugarhill Gang in the long version. A great song of course and I remember that there must exist a German version. It was the first rap song in German and was made by three radio DJ's. They are all different ages and tell us about their musical influence from the 50s to the 70s. The youngest one Thomas Gottschalk became famous in German when when he started to moderate entertainment shows on TV.
