Monday's Long Song

 

During the weekend Drew featured his latest purchases on Twitter. Beside Richard Norris' superb Hypnotic Response he also owned a release form a 30 year old collaboration between The Grid and Robert Fripp. The Grid was formed by Richard Norris and Soft Cell's David Ball as an early dance group. Robert Fripp was well known as a leading member of King Crimson and one of the first rock musicians that collaborated in the early 90's with new electronic music. The Grid and Fripp met for several sessions and the result was released on two albums almost 30 years ago. But there was more material that cried out to be released. The result is Leviathan where Fripp plays his Frippertronics to a sea of ambient. Fantastic music and a classic on another planet.

In 1993 David Sylvian released his first collaboration with former King Crimson's guitar player Robert Fripp The First Day. I knew Sylvian from his former band Japan and his album Tin Drum. It was a kind of music I don't listen regular to but sometimes I get into the mood of getting lost in this kind of dreamy and arty music. Fripp's guitar broadened Sylvian's music into another musical dimension. This video from the 90's shows exactly his ambition in searching for another piece of ambient psychedelia.

Purchased (Not Only) By The Cover

M. Walking On The Water was a German indie-band formed in the mid 80's and one of those bands a lot of people could agree. From the beginning they were hard to categorize because they added many unusual instruments like accordion and a violin to their sound. In 1983 they released an EP with six cover versions from prog-rock and hard rock era. I've seen this cover and I recognized that it was a tribute to Pink Floyd's Atom Heart Mother. And their versions are worth to listen because they were more interpretations of songs almost everybody knew. It was also courageous to cover songs from this era. I don't know any other band that tried this.

Tool is a famous American rock band who started with classical heavy metal and turned later into so called alternative metal. Influenced by The Melvins and King Crimson they found their corner in playing their music. They are also well known for their videos and I have to admit that they are awesome. It is late in the evening but I am enjoying their powerful sound and the bass on their records so much.
