The Limiñanas, a neo-psychedelic band from the south of France, are back with a new album, which is due to be released in a fortnight. As usual, they manage to span the musical spectrum from Velvet Underground to Serge Gainsbourg to Jesus and Mary Jane.

In addition to Jon Spencer, Bobbie Gillespie was also invited as a guest this time, whose voice fits perfectly with the sound underpinned by distorted guitars.

Their homage to the YéYé sound of the sixties is also very beautiful, as they cover a song by Francoise Hardy and transform its sound perfectly into the here and now.

Blood On The Moon

 

Sometimes I really got surprised about a collaboration I never thought. Yesterday the news arrived that a new song is out by Alan Vega, who died seven years ago. Blood On The Moon is a collaboration between him and Bobby Gillespie and Roxy's Andy Mackay. I have no further information about this but assume that it was a contribution to a compilation for his 70th birthday almost 20 years ago. Anyway, it shows that Vega's song can work in different kind of styles. This one lifts the song to a techno/house level and Andy Mackey serves some saxophone parts to work in a different direction. A very nice song and worth to be featured at this place.

Monday's Long Song

 

Last Friday our friend JC over at The New Vinyl Villain posted a superb story about Chemical Brothers' Surrender 20th Anniversary Vinyl Box. He was tempted to release a 21 minute version of Out Of Control but finally selected another song. Thankfully he delivered me a copy and after listening to a tour-de-force of dance music I think it is necessary to feature it on this series. Written together with Bernard Sumner from New Order and backing vocals by Bobby Gillespie the song has a fantastic base line and guitar and synths keep pushing this song forward. A mad psychedelic mix full of echoes and beats from an era long gone by but still at the height of time.

In 1992 Scottish band Primal Scream went after their eponymous album Screamadelica to Memphis to make an album with legendary producer Tom Dowd and the Muscle Shoals rhythm section. The sessions lead to an album that never saw the light of day until a few years ago. Many of the tracks were released on their fourth album Give Out But Don't Give Up but the songs from their sessions were much better than on this album. Primal Scream and Bobby Gillespie had never before and after more soul than in Memphis and better musicians in the background. Never expected that a Scottish band could play soulful song like these. I still come back to their Memphis' recordings from time to time with great joy.

Rebel Dub

Because I have to work only two days and then have several days free I do my job very relaxed. So I think I post another dub-influenced song. This one is from Primal Scream's 1997 record 'Vanishing Point' when Bobby Gillespie turned into dub, ambient, krautrock and dance. Still a very good record after the years. This song was released on the 2009 Japanese edition of the lp. The lady on the picture is Ellen Church - the first female flight attendant
