Splendid Racket

In 1985 Grant Hart and Bob Mould created one of the best albums in this decade. Hüsker Dü were those who held up the flag of independent and noise. The songs of New Day Rising are still fresh after all those years that have passed by since then. These songs are still the blueprint of all bands who formed later.

I have rather problems with my laptop since a few days. It takes almost half an hour to start and many file-hosting services don't work any more. So I have to look out for a new laptop and until then I will release my posts via a tablet or my mobile phone (if I find the time during the next days).

It was back in 2003 when four brothers from Nashville released their first album Youth & Young Manhood. I expected by Kings of Leon nothing more than some country-rock stuff. But what they brought to us was nothing more or less the return southern rock with massive guitars. Many of my friends could agree to this record and their songs were played at many parties at my place. Listening to this songs after a long time I have to admit that they still sound fresh and their guitars were on fire sometimes. Probably another band that got their little success and vanished after they reached their peak. But it's good to remember them from time to time.

Last Monday I wrote about noisy music that came from over the Atlantic ocean. But also Great Britain had in its music history many periods of bands that made loud music that had great influence to many other artists. Best example for me is Spacemen 3 as one of the most revolutionary UK guitar bands. Revolution marks it at the best. A few chords, feedback and it's psychedelic mood makes this song in this genre.

From many other bands that made wonderful noise only a few examples for today. One of those who should be named here is Dublin's My Bloody Valentine with a superb example how to create explosive soundscapes with guitars.

Another one are Oxford's Ride, a band that is with various breaks active from the early 90's on and still good for surprises in new sounds but still on a great rhythm ground. Still and always a pleasure to listen to them.

In the mid 90's everybody talked about Grunge as the biggest thing around for ages. Bands like Pearl Jam and Soundgarden were praised to give us back rock music. For me these bands made some good albums and songs but originally they brought us back a combination of hard rock in new style. Most of them are like old wine in new bottles. But there were bands that was put in the same category and don't really belong to it. There were bands that took the spirit of punk and garage rock to play a new heavy guitar style and that came much closer to the music I preferred decades ago. I really enjoyed the noise bands like Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. made and it is still a pleasure to listen to them again.

Splendid Racket Monday

Last Monday CC started a new series with Noisy Music Monday featuring Nirvana. I think it is a great idea but as the comment section has suggested I name it Splendid Racket Monday. To join is easy because I have introduced a long song yesterday. I made my thoughts what could be played in a noisy series and the first thought was Motörhead a band that used to play around Christmas a my places and I often went for them because they stood for true Rock and Roll and they used to play very loud. Every time I listen to No Sleep Till Hammersmith I remember the power Lemmy on stage. And probably one of the best live albums in heavy metal.
