Back in 1990 Bristol's The Aeroplanes released in my opinion their masterpiece Swagger, an album of jangly guitar sound with mostly spoken lyrics. I don't really know if they were in UK as big as in Germany these days but you could hear this music in almost every pub. Seldom before and after I listened to a guitar-rock album with pure joy (except Sugar's Copper Blue). Swagger is a guitar-led album somewhere between guitar-driven bands like Big Country and the upcoming shoe-gaze like Ride. The guitar carries catchy melodies and not the voice. Something unusual for the time. Sure an album that stood the test of times.

During the last weeks I developed an album that was released 30 years ago. In 1989 Bob Mould made a great album after Hüsker Dü split with Workbook under his own name. A few years later he formed with Sugar a new three piece band. Copper Blue was an unexpected highlight of this year. I seldom listened to an album later that had these intensive and emotional, powerful sound. This was the true legacy of Hüsker Dü and still a landmark in rock music from the 90's. Always a pleasure listen to him.

In the early 90's the greatest hype was grunge. Lots of people followed the main bands and you could hear everywhere bands that seemed to be Nirvana's epigones. When Nirvana sounded fresh most of the others were cheap copies for me. Then Bob Mould released in 1992 his epic album with his first band Sugar after Hüsker Dü Copper Blue. I loved this album from the first day and it is still on rotation at my home. He showed how to combine guitar riffs, harmonies and melodies and created great songs. Simply one of the best records from this time and I can't believe that it is 28 years old.

Sugar

After the resolution of Hüsker Dü in 1988 Bob Mould formed after a few solo album s the three pieced alternative rock band Sugar. Their first album Copper Blue is an outstanding trademark of post-punk in the early 90's. Filled with a lot of great songs that continues the tradition of Hüsker Dü with a punk style guitar and slowing the tempo sometimes and adding emphasizing melodies to their sound. I don't know the reason why but after all new music I come back to this record. It is a trademark for this music and probably a trademark for independent music. Thank you Bob Mould.
