Velvet Underground

During the last weekend I played a few records by Velvet Underground at my place again and suddenly remembered that Jonathan Richman made a homage to this great band many years ago. His words were wise and describe exactly what the Velvets are and mean to a lot of people. Seldom an artist praised his heroes like he did.And this is not the only reason to feature this song at this place for the first time.

They were wild like the USA
A mystery band in a New York way
Rock and roll, but not like the rest
And to me, America at it's best
How in the world were they making that sound?
Velvet Underground.

What Happened To Power Pop # 4

Let me continue this series with a typical American band. The Rubinoos started their career as another High School band playing to dance in the early 1970s in California. They got signed to Beserkley Records among the rest, therefore because informal relations contact with the owner of the label existed. Suddenly they were label mates to Greg Kihn and Jonathan Richman. I listened to a lot of this stuff at this time and I remember some great songs from the publication of this label. The Rubinoos got a little success with a cover version of Tommy James 'I think we're alone now'. It's nice to listen to this song again.

Blue Boy

It looks thus as if Ghana my yesterday's post has read. If I have still said yesterday that no African team has the possibilities to come to the final round, I must correct myself now. Watching the game between Ghana and Germany showed what can happen if a team is willing to fight and to run. It was maybe the best second half during the last couple of tournaments. I have seldom seen a game like this when both teams get rid of their tactical orders and just trying to win the game. After all I have to admit that Germany won one point and I am sure that Ghana is able to beat Portugal. But it's different to tell which teams will reach the final round. It's possible that Germany will be fruitless against the United States. Anyway, I'm looking forward to this game watching together with my American brother in law.

Today's track is from the new album by Mac DeMarco released this year. He is a Canadian and plays a guitar-based music with much influence by early glam-rock, Ray Davis and Jonathan Richman.
