Monday's Long Song

The film Shaft was released in 1971 and for the first time the main character was a black private detective who behaved as naturally as his white colleagues: self-confident, not believing in any authority. The character and the film did the black community a lot of good and ensured that they were able to display a new self-confidence.

The soundtrack was provided by Isaak Hayes, who climbed to the top of the charts with the title song. An anticipated blueprint for the disco wave to come. But the accompanying double album has much more to offer. Perfectly arranged soul songs that seamlessly follow on from his classic Hot Buttered Soul.

Hayes has always been someone who could stretch his songs to almost 20 minutes without them being boring. Do Your Thing is one of them. It begins with a fantastic bass line, brass instruments are added and Hayes' baritone ennobles this soul piece. After about 10 minutes, the guitar and drums take over. The wah-wah guitar wails and the drums roll over and take the bass with them. This turns a soul song into an almost endless jam. Really hot and a masterpiece even after more than 50 years.

Monday's Long Song

Bildergebnis für isaac hayes

Today's song is a landmark in soul music. Isaak Hayes released his second album for Stax records in 1969 and  it surprised that there were only four songs on it. Walk On By on side one with it's 12 minute running wasn't usual in the late 60's and for soul songs at all. That Hayes could top it on side two less people could imagine. By The Time I Get To Phoenix runs more than 18 minutes and it still touches me when Isaak's deep voice telling me his very own view of relationship. For me his masterpiece.

The Last Shadow Puppets announce the release of their second album in a few weeks. They say that this album sounds more to Isaak Hayes and Paul Weller's Style Council than their last record. And yes this song is a very good pop song indeed. Smooth soul meets soft Rock 'n' Roll and violins. Music to drive a cabrio into the sunset.

Take Care My Baby

Matthew E. White is back with a new album called 'Fresh Blood'. And he's back on a high soul level again. Smooth songs in the tradition of Isaak Hayes and Barry White (not with his voice - but his spirit). The first track of his latest record could be a classic if it was released 40 years ago. He's got the soul of the ones I named even if he was looking like a mixture of Bob Seger and Greg Allman. It's good old soul music played with a lot of soul inside. Worth to have a listen if you're in this kind of genre.
