Monday's Long Song

Whilst I was packing my record collection into boxes in preparation for the upcoming move, I came across a record that I hadn’t listened to in ages. A Dead Horse is the fourth album by The Golden Palominos from 1989. They aren’t a band per se, but rather a project by Anton Fier, the former drummer of The Feelies. The only permanent members were Bill Laswell on bass and Nicky Skopelitis on guitar. Apart from that, Fier regularly brought together leading figures from the New York nu-wave/nu-jazz scene to create his own blend of alternative, country and electronic music.

Monday's Long Song

The past years have seen Duncan Gray champion a sludgy, slow-mo take on dance music that favors chuggy bass guitars and psychedelic sound palettes and drag and drop samples. He was featured at this place several times and often with new releases that were all over the usual average of new releases in electronic music. Now he's back with a new release on London's tici taca label. Short Haul is a bassy song inspired by the sound of Bill Laswell and Eno's/Byrne's Bush of Ghosts with great guitar parts in the second half. Anyway a one of the best songs this year so far.

In Dub

Our beloved bass-man released a few days ago a retrospective of his dub works during the last decades. I think that I don't have to say much about him and his musical history. He was one of the few that made a lot of records better than the average when he played the bass. He absorbed many influences - punk, world and jazz in his very unique sound. I listened to this record a lot during the last days. Not every songs is close to me but all in all it shows the continues spectrum of his musical education.

Funky Friday

Jah Wobble and Bill Laswell were always a beacon to me. They drifted between punk, New Wave, Jazz and industrial during their years. I still love Jah's bass on the records that made them different to most of all that was published during their years in progress. This is a sound that sounds like BOF and way backn in time when your hear it for the first time. But if you get into the music, the groove and the improvisation you might get lucky you heard this music. It is timeless and far beyond the mainstream. Give them a chance to listen and you'll get satisfied.

A Dub Transmission

Found this little masterpiece from Bill Laswell a few days ago. It's one of the collaborations with another bass players. Here is a fine laid back tune with another hero of bass and dub: Jah Wobble. Music for later evenings when you sit relaxed with a good glass of red vine and you can get lost in music. I think that I should hear The Golden Palominos again.

Enjoy!!
