Songs For The Eternety

Bildergebnis für joy division

I came home last night after watching my team against Bochum which was playing in the no-mans land between promotion and descent. Finally we draw 1:1 and it was a good result after all even were were the better team. But we had a lot of luck during the last games and so it is all right. Sadly I have no time and no impulse for a steady new series or something else in a row. When I came home yesterday I searched for some good music to finish the day and I decided to listen once again to the records of Joy Division. It is more than 30 years ago since I got a spot on their output but I was fascinated by their songs from the first time I listened to them. It was a mixture of post-punk, dark and intimate songs. Most of them in a somber mood and Ian Curtis sung his emotions in a way I've never heard before. Listening to this old fashioned music made me finish a perfect day and maybe it is a start into a new series.

This video made by Anton Corbijn, a Dutch photographer and music video director shows all what the band stand for: darkness, mystic, despair and hope. Really a song for eternity.

Michael Talbot Affair

Bildergebnis für keith hudson reggae

These days a record by Keith Hudson the so called 'Dark Prince Of Reggae' was re-released. Pick A Dub. He was one of those who created dub/reggae in the early days but he didn't got the credits that he should have. Lee Perry and King Tubby made a stand in our ears but he never made the the big success that he should have. I listened to this record Pick a Dub many times during the last days and I have to say that it is a forgotten masterpiece and landmark of Jamaican progressive mixing and music. Worth  to get a listen.

Licensed To Ill

Bildergebnis für beastie boys

It is 30 years ago that Beastie Boys climbed to number one with their first album. Originally a hardcore punk band they demonstrated the genre of hip hop and rap rock on this album. It was a sound I've never heard before. And it was a sound a lot of people could agree with. Suddenly a few opened their ears on a new kind of music and that's one of the reasons why they have they their place in history. Sadly not everyone followed their next recordings that are better in my opinion but less successful. Sadly Adam Yauch passed away too soon.

I don't know on which album this was but I like their version of a late 60's classic.

Beastie Boys - Light my fire

And in addition to the first song something real different by Stiff Little Fingers:

Three Mile Harbour

Bildergebnis für thomas dybdahl

A few months ago a friend introduced me to Thomas Dybdahl a Norway singer and songwriter from Norway. I enjoyed listened to his songs but forgot him during many other things to do. Now I got the news that he released a new record last week. The songs I listened to were carried in the tradition of giants like Nick Drake and Tim Buckley but added with some Rhythm and Blues. Certainly not the worst opinion to start into the Sunday.

Daylight

Bildergebnis für vintage speedway

One of the finest moments this week was that we finally found a date for gathering in Glagsow in May. I will check out the flights during this weekend and I am sure I will find a solution that fits to me. Meanwhile a song I found these days from a new band to me. Shadow band seems to come from Philadelphia and released a home-recorded folk-psychedelic, low-fi album these days. Certainly not the next big thing but a record I listened much the recent days. When  Daylight is more a finger-picked ballad Mad John with it's echoed guitar is more bluesy. Anyway, a band I wonder where their career will lead them to.

Have a great weekend.

Do Re Mi

Bildergebnis für ry cooder

It is now years ago since I've featured Ry Cooder at this place. He's known for his slide-guitar playing and transforming American native music into nowadays. I followed him since he released his first works on LP and especially when he introduced me into Hawaiian music with Chicken Skin Music. I also liked his music he made to several soundtracks He was in collaborations with a lot of famous musicians during the last decades and his influential guitar playing is still one of the best I know. There would be a lot of more songs to feature than this little ones and it doesn't matter which song it is. I am sure you will find your own song by him.

Ry Cooder - Get Rhythm
Ry Cooder - Trouble You Can't Fool Me
Ry Cooder - I Got Mine
Ry Cooder - Goodnight Irene

Modern English

Bildergebnis für modern english band

Modern English from Essex was a new wave/post punk band that many people could agree to in the early 80's. Starting with Drowning Man in the late 70's on the paths of punk they turned later shallow regions but always far over the average. They did some new wave/pop songs that I still remember after all these years.

Enjoy the retrospect to years gone by.
