Move On Up

 

Yesterday, I received the news that the apartment I have been living in for 13 years has been sold. My landlord informed me 16 months ago that it was going to be sold. Since then, I have been hoping that an investor would be found who would allow me to continue living here as a tenant. However, this is no longer possible, and I will have to find new accommodation in the course of this year. 

I'm far from complaining about this, but over the next few months I'll be looking around the competitive housing market and hoping to find an affordable apartment. I remain optimistic that I'll succeed. Until then, here are a few songs with moving or relocating in the title.

Singles Released This Week Years Ago

 

Another look back at remarkable publications from the last few decades.

1996 Bob Dylan's son Jakob appeared on the scene with his band The Wallflowers. His song were massive influenced by Springsteen and Tom Petty and rather successful.

In 1965 the Rolling Stones released one of my favorite songs by them.

1996 also saw the rise of Alanis Morrisette and her debut album climbed high in the charts.

1995: I always liked this song by Tom Petty and the video as well.

1973: Dr. John brought us the gris-gris sound. Swamp blues at it's best.

1992: Nirvana released their classic Come As You Are.

Last week I posted I'm Free a cover version by The Soup Dragons. After this I recognized, that during the years I never featured The Rolling Stones on these pages. To be honest, I thought about it but wasn't sure if I should write about a chapter of their musical history, their best songs, their main influences or something else. Maybe I will find the time for a post in the future. While listening to I'm free, many cover versions of her songs came to my mind. Many are irrelevant and far too close to the original. Others have been radically altered or deconstructed to fit the sound of the performer. Like Devo or Motörhead, for example, who have amplified the driving force of Sympathy for the Devil with minimal means. This is just a small subjective overview of how these songs could have sounded if someone else had written them and should in no way be seen in competition with Rol's fantastic Top Ten.

Charlie Watts 1941 - 2021

Sad news arrived that Charlie Watts died at the age of 80 after he was healed from throat cancer. He was the drummer for The Rolling Stones for ages and a member of the band that didn't want to be called as the main part of the band. But with his stoic and varied drumming he stamped the sound of the Stones. He also introduced me with his fondness to jazz music to listen to some others in this genre.

Dead Flowers

A few days ago I watched once again to The Big Lebowski, one of my favourite films ever. The story is so fanciful and madcap but always a pleasure to watch. Also the soundtrack is difficult to many others. A very unique mixture of classic film music by Henry Mancini and classic country/rock songs. There is one song on this movie I love much. It is Town Van Zandt's version of Rolling Stones' Dead Flowers. I am not the greatest fan of the Stones but I agree to a lot of songs when they turned into country and they collaborated with Gram Parson. When their original version was great than I would like to name Towne's version epic because he sings this song with much more empathy than Mr. Jagger could do.

Sharing The Night Together

Let's start the week with an old song from Arthur Alexander. He wrote a lot of songs and many of them were covered by famous bands like the early Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Ike and Tina Turner and Dusty Springfield. But it is still worth to listen to the originals. Sharing the night together was a top hit by Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show.
