Up On Cripple Creek

Bildergebnis für the band

During these days many albums were re-released as anniversary editions. If you need necessarily need to purchase shouldn't be the question. The main thing for me is to remember when I listened the first time to those records and if it is worth to come back to them once again. In September 1969 The Band mixture of Canadian and American musicians released their self titled second album. Some of knew them as the backing band of Bob Dylan and probably from The Weight a song featured on Easy Rider. In my very younger days it was very unusual to listen to country music in any characteristic and some of had a hidden spot on this music. For me The Band were the link to other country music for me and this record is still worth to come back to it because of the great songs and the superb vocals and harmonies they had.

Happy Birthday Garth Hudson

Bildergebnis für garth hudson

Today Garth Hudson celebrates his 80th birthday. He was a forming member of The Band and a much-in-demand and highly respected session musician. The Band was the one of the first bands who lead me into traditional American music. And still I go back to this kind of music from time to time. They were very different to lots of other bands in the late 60's when guitar solos ruled the world. It was the organ sound of Garth Hudson (and the voice of Levon Helm) that made their music extraordinary.

The Last Waltz

Bildergebnis für the band the last waltz

More than 40 years ago The Band gave their farewell concert in San Francisco. It was filmed by Martin Scorsese and made a documentary out of it. I watched this movie in my very younger days and I didn't understand the hype they made out of it. They named this film one of the best concert films ever. For me it was only a collection of fossils from another era. Years later I owned the record and watched this film with very different eyes. Not only The Band at the hight of their times - there were artists that had real fun playing at this venue. And classic songs as well.
