English Ruse

If anyone remembers Supergrass, an Oxford based band which was named as another brit-pop band you might forgot them as well as me. Their lead singer and guitarist Gareth 'Gaz' Coombes released his first solo record a few month ago called Matador. It is one of those records that impress me much. Good guitars, an afficted voice and a great arrangement and some Krautrock improvisations added. Hymns for the future if somebody would listen to. The more I listen to them the more I get addicted to them. Not the usual sound with a beat, a repeating refrain or a guitar riff - more than very clever arranged songs where you explore more and more details the more you listen to it. Surely a highlight this year (and there were a lot of).

Matador is indeed a very good album, and quite experimental. It isn't, however, Gaz's solo debut. He put out an album called Here Come The Bombs in 2012 which is also well worth investigating.

Walter, like these songs a lot, clever arrangements as you said.

I agree Walter. Initially I found 'Matador' too smooth, but something made me stick with it nonetheless - and I'm very glad I did. The high quality songwriting and inspired twists and turns in the arrangements department have made this one of my favourite albums of the year so far and must surely be good for a small wager when it comes to Mercury Award time.

These are really good Walter. Stopped listening to him after Supergrass but these tracks today make me want to investigate further.

Really impressed by these clips, Walter. Didn't know about this album at all. Thanks.
