Monday's Long Song

 

Another working week is over and the next one starts again. Of course, nothing has changed since my vacation. The desk is full of work to be done at short notice and one meeting chases the other. And for years I have again had the opportunity to experience a winter with a lot of snow and temperatures below zero. In this respect, everything runs its usual course and I can devote myself to musical excursions again in my time out of duty. I was struggling which song will be the next in this series and I found a song by The Grid on my hard drive that I didn't listen to for a very long time. Swamp Thing was released in 1994 by Richard Norris and David Ball aka The Grid. I liked this song not only because the unthinkable combination of techno and banjo that probably inspired Redneck for their Cotton Eye Joe. A song that still works after nearly 30 years.

Part two of my personal review of albums that impressed me much this year. When I look at the list it seems that my taste in music reduced speed and turned into more ambient. But this is not the truth. It is only because less complete albums made me feel to listen completely for several times. During the weekend Drew featured his latest purchases on Twitter. Beside Richard Norris' superb Hypnotic Response he also owned a release form a 30 year old collaboration between The Grid and Robert Fripp. The Grid was formed by Richard Norris and Soft Cell's David Ball as an early dance group. Robert Fripp was well known as a leading member of King Crimson and one of the first rock musicians that collaborated in the early 90's with new electronic music. The Grid and Fripp met for several sessions and the result was released on two albums almost 30 years ago. But there was more material that cried out to be released. The result is Leviathan where Fripp plays his Frippertronics to a sea of ambient. Fantastic music and a classic on another planet.
