Music For Houseworks

I have already mentioned several times that I am not a big fan of radio programmes. But from time to time I treat myself to this to make some housework more bearable.  Recently, an Austrian radio station ran a long feature about new female groups. I was amazed at how many new bands there were that needed to be talked about.

First of them are eat-girls, a post-punk band from Lyon, France. Their sound embraces pop, post-punk, kraut, minimal synths and some dub and their vocals remind me Kim Gordon, Flying Lizards and a bit of Siouxie. 3 Omens has also a hypnotic beat that you cannot escape. Chapeau.

Girlband! are a three piece female band from Nottingham and shows some rebellious girls. Starting their alternative rock as another DIY-band, playing at private house concerts until the police came and stopped them. Nothing more than another Courtney Love inspired music but fresh, charming and on a high indie-pop niveau.

Another Underrated Album From Last Year

It is almost one year ago when Preston romantics White Flowers released Day By Day their first full album. I got this one digital, listened to it and forgot. When I cleaned um my hard drive I found this album once again and finally I saw the beauty of this record. Some might call it another shoegaze record or a poor copy of the Cocteau Twins or a slow version of Siouxie but I think they have all the named ingredients but on a very own way. There are ethereous voices over all songs and sparse orchestrated but always with a touch of dark sound. For some times this albums works very well and it is worth to be featured at this little place of the internet.

Priestess

Bildergebnis für pumarosa

The recent days I heard about the new album by Pumarosa, another band from London. I got aware of them a few years ago when they released their last album. I don't know the whole album but there was one song that I played often in these days and I ask myself why I Priestess didn't appear on this site until know. The band call their sound Industrial Spirit but for me it is like Siouxsie singing on an magic dance track with the help of tempered electric guitars.

And for those who want to know how they sound a few years later - here is their newest single:

Pumarosa

Another new band was introduced on Austrian radio station a few days ago. Pumarosa is named by a South American fruit and the word stands for 'rose apple'. This London based band was formed by Isabel Munoz-Newsome a few years ago and they call their sound 'industrial spiritual' and I have to admit that I had no idea what they sound like. All the songs are dominated by the voice of Munoz-Newsome, something between Siouxie Sioux, Savages' Jenny Beth and Kate Bush. I can  hear a lot of influences of post-punk and shoegaze in their sound and it is a pleasure listen to them.

Today is ascension day and it's a bank holiday at my place. Most of the people celebrate this day as father's day. A lot of young people will charge their handcart with beer and a bluetooth equipment wandering around the open landscape. Me I will go and meet a couple of friends later this day for hanging around in one of our beergardens.

Savages

Bildergebnis für savages band

The Savages are a four piece female London based band formed a few years ago and living the spirit of Siouxise Sioux and the early P.J. Harvey with a few ingredients of Joy Division. Some might call them retro post-punk but for me it is just fresh and individual guitar dominated new wave based rock music. Angular guitar riffs, a bass sharp as a razor and aggressive lyrics makes them unique in these days. The more I listen to their new record Adore Life I find more and more references to early 80s independent music and I can imagine that they would be live better than on their latest record.

Ha Howa Ha Howa

Maybe one of the craziest ideas these days was transfered to reality. Bat for Lashes' Natasha Khan, TOY and producer Dan Carey teamed to form Sexwitch to cover a bunch of early 60 psychedelic songs from Iran, Thailand and Morocco. The lyrics from the originals were transfered into English and the songs were recorded in almost one day. The result is nothing more than something magic and hard to describe music. Based on a permanent drums in the foreground some guitar and organ prepare the ground for Natasha's voice that reminds me sometimes to Siouxie Sioux. All in all music you can get addicted to.

Heatwave

Let's start this week with a little lost gem from the New Wave era. Fay Ray was another band that made good music and their record did not sell at all. The leading voice of Sheila McCartney reminds me a lot to Siouxsie Sioux's but their music had more pop influence. Their songs are arranged with accordion, saxophone and flute what makes them sound really strange for a ordinary New Wave band. Give them a chance and enjoy.
