Massive

Bildergebnis für massive attack

On Monday Drew offered us a fantastic remix of Massive Attack vs. Burial that inspired me to grab out a few records by the Bristol legends. Massive Attack was one of those bands that established Trip-Hop and the Bristol sound in the early 90's. The songs were stamped by a reduced rhythm, clear vocals and sometimes sharp guitars. I don't know why but the first record I grabbed out was No Protection, their 1995 dub remix of their second album in collaboration with Mad Professor. Still a great dub record after all these years and well worth to listen to.

From their most successful album Mezzanine is the next song I almost forgot and was remembered when I listened to the record once again. It is not Teardrops or other songs from the charts. Inertia Creeps with it's Arabic influenced rhythm was always a favorite of mine and need to be featured on this small place in the internet.

Tuesday' Cover

Bildergebnis für Dominique Rocheteau

Songs by Neil Young were covered by many artists but less did their job as good as St. Etienne back in 1991 on their superb album Foxbase Alpha. This is how a cover version should be done. Take the essence of this country influenced ballade and turn it into something very different. This song was the entrance to the music of St. Etienne for me.

AS Saint-Étienne is also the name of probably the best French football team in the 70's. The club reached in 1976 in Glasgower Hampden Park the finale of the European cup of the land masters against Bavaria Munich – and lost it with 0:1. In this match met AS Saint Etienne ever once under the slat and in the inside post of the Munich box. Because the gate frame was still angular at that time, the ball in both cases did not cross the line, and though thus Sepp Maier was hit, however, Bavaria still won to zero. Still today everybody knows in Saint-Étienne what is meant if somebody speaks of "les poteaux carrés" („the angular posts“). The next day in spite of the defeat the team was received on the Paris Champs Elysées as the up to now only French association team of an immense crowd of people. I remember watching this game together with my dad and I was much impressed by Saint Étiennes winger Dominique Rocheteau the main actor in this game.

Modnay's Long Song

Bildergebnis für sigur ros

Back in 1999 an interesting sound appeared from Iceland to my ears. Sigur Ros was the one that made me investigate for more. Since The Sugercubes and Björk it was the first band from Iceland that impressed me very much. I missed  Sigur Ros' first album but their second one is still one of those that I come back with fun from time to time. Maybe it is their interpretation of post-rock, psychedelic and their intimate and unique sound that made this record for me one of the best in this era.

Bildergebnis für salute musician

Currently residing in Manchester, Felix Nyalo aka salute was born and raised in Vienna and have found inspiration and solace within this town. Influenced in his youth by UK bass culture and US dance music he enlarged his spectrum with 70's funk and 80's synth music. The result is a song with high pitched vocals and fast techno beats. Frankie Knuckles would have liked this one.

Bildergebnis für wolf alice radio 1

Two years ago Wolf Alice made a live session at Radio 1 to promote their newest album. She threw in a version of Green Day's Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) that fascinated me from the first time on I heard it. Taking down the tempo to a notch and only Ellie Roswell's voice and some picking guitar makes a shivering  sound that could be compared to Cowboy Junkies debut.

Monday's Long Song

Bildergebnis für NEU!

1972 former Kraftwerk members Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother formed NEU! a band that was responsible among others for the Krautrock sound of the early 70's. Their first self titled album is a classic ans still on rotation at my home. Hallogallo is the best example of what became famous of what they call motorik. Klaus Dinger's mechanic drum rhythms combined with Michael Rother's melodic-harmonic guitar chords made the sound that influenced a lot of artists decades later.

The Return Of Saturday Moon

Bildergebnis für mond

It was almost three month ago when I saw a documentary about the moon, the space and how we to get to our satellite and tried to conquer them. I thought about to make a small series with songs/artists that had moon in their names but sadly forgotten about it. The last days I remembered it and I decided to post another songs with moon in their title. Of course it is hard to name the best but at the end it is the fact that I will feature the songs that mean something/a lot to me. So enjoy and have a great weekend. Me I will go for watching my team playing against our neighbor in the table. Both down at the bottom and close to relegation. We will see what happens - anyway life goes on.

David Bowie - Moonage Daydream
Echo and the Bunnymen - The Killing Moon
Thin Lizzy - Dancing In The Moonlight
Van Morrison - Moondance
