Tuesday' Cover

Bildergebnis für Dominique Rocheteau

Songs by Neil Young were covered by many artists but less did their job as good as St. Etienne back in 1991 on their superb album Foxbase Alpha. This is how a cover version should be done. Take the essence of this country influenced ballade and turn it into something very different. This song was the entrance to the music of St. Etienne for me.

AS Saint-Étienne is also the name of probably the best French football team in the 70's. The club reached in 1976 in Glasgower Hampden Park the finale of the European cup of the land masters against Bavaria Munich – and lost it with 0:1. In this match met AS Saint Etienne ever once under the slat and in the inside post of the Munich box. Because the gate frame was still angular at that time, the ball in both cases did not cross the line, and though thus Sepp Maier was hit, however, Bavaria still won to zero. Still today everybody knows in Saint-Étienne what is meant if somebody speaks of "les poteaux carrés" („the angular posts“). The next day in spite of the defeat the team was received on the Paris Champs Elysées as the up to now only French association team of an immense crowd of people. I remember watching this game together with my dad and I was much impressed by Saint Étiennes winger Dominique Rocheteau the main actor in this game.

Two years ago Wolf Alice made a live session at Radio 1 to promote their newest album. She threw in a version of Green Day's Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) that fascinated me from the first time on I heard it. Taking down the tempo to a notch and only Ellie Roswell's voice and some picking guitar makes a shivering  sound that could be compared to Cowboy Junkies debut.

A lot of courage already is necessary to seize one of the best songs of the early 80's and to play in a cover version which deals generally nothing more with the original. Schneider TM if is an experimental solo project of Dirk Dresselhaus which devotes itself to the electric and electronic music. When I first listened to this version of The Smiths song There Was A Light That Never Goes Out  I couldn't believe that this was possible and I asked myself several time if this version was good or not. Finally this version made me curious to this kind of music and I got deeper and deeper to electronic sounds and music.

Bildergebnis für idles

In the early days of punk many bands made a reverence to classic songs in a way of interpreting them like they were part of their own sound. Following this tradition Bristol based band Idles covered Solomon Burke's Cry to Me. Idles kept the spirit of post-punk and hardcore alive with the release of their last year record Joy as an Act of Resistance. All of their songs are full of power, moving forward with enthusiasm and verve. This cover is dominated by a monster bass according to Joe Talbot's voice. Later on drums and guitars join in to a furious final.

Bildergebnis für mavis staples

I am not the one that is very deep in soul music but I always loved great female voices. One of those that I ever loved listened to was Mavis Staples. Formed by her fathers she grew up with gospel and blues and got famous by The Staple Singers. During her career lasting for decades she always made cover versions and played with younger and older artists. In 1983 Talking Heads released their fifth album Speaking in Tongues with a few of their best songs in their later career. Slippery People was one of the early 80's songs that made a lot of fun with it's tribal rhythm combined with classic NYC funk. Mavis Staples took this song for her own and made some cover versions. Once live a few years ago and another longer version a few years earlier. What this song makes great is the fantastic bass line and the way Mavis turns this song into a superb soulful and funky way.

In this series it should be shown that some great (and forgotten) songs other artists keep alive doing their very own thing with this song. Not only to fill a record or serving the audience the song for an encore. I will try to promote some versions that are rather different to the original or close to it but in a way the song could be one of the songs that the band who made the cover has written originally. Ceremony by Joy Division was one of these examples. A song that never made it on an album by them was covered by Galaxie 500, a post-punk influenced band from greater NYC and they were active in the late 80's, I remember that their second record On Fire was on almost every independent turntable at these days and I have to admit that I loved their reduced independent guitar sound. The cover of Ceremony was the start to grab out the old vinyl of Galaxie 500 and it still makes me happy to listen to them after a very long time.
