New Song On Sunday

 

I have always had great respect for artists who get involved in social projects, even if this rarely results in anything great musically. Some time ago, Massive Attack and Edinburgh's Young Father joined forces and released ceasfire together with Fontaine's D.C.. An EP on which all proceeds are to be donated to Doctors Without Frontiers, a worldwide association of doctors who alleviate the greatest need in the current crisis and war zones. Musically, the result is a trip-hop track that I wouldn't have expected. Piano chords break through the slow groove of Give, where spoken words take centre stage. The song, which could easily have been written by Sault, is convincing and had me pressing the play button again and again.

A few weeks ago I discovered an album that passed me by when it was released last year. Heavy Heavy by Edinburgh's three piece band Young Fathers was played often during the last days at my place. I got aware of them when they released their debut Dead back in 2014 with their own evaluation of hip hop. Now they are back after a couple of years with more percussive and repetitive elemens in the forground of their songs. Sometimes referencing alfrobeat and sometimes trip hop. Although their songs often use an up-beat they are always soulful and it sounds that 10 or more people singing the chorous. 

God Only Knows

A few days ago T2: Trainspotting was released and also the soundtrack to this movie. It took 20 years to make a sequel of one of the best British film ever. I like Trainspotting for its genius combination of visuals and music. And the OST of it is probably the best soundtrack I've heard. Simply a perfect combination of classic songs from different decades. I am not a big fan of sequels but I want to know how the story goes on and if it is different to the novels by Irvine Welsh. The heartbeat of Trainspotting was Underworld's Born Slippy and it it hard to find another one in the sequel. Director Danny Boyle decided for Edinburghs hip-hop band Young Fathers. And it wasn't a bad decision. Not the same class as Born Slippy but a forward pushing piece of hip-hop, gospel and industrial.

Soon Come Soon

Edinburgh gave us another new and fantastic band: Young Fathers. I didn't heard from them until I got the news that they was the this years winner of the Mercury Prize. Young Fathers are a trio that make a seldom heard combination of HipHop, undefinable electronic sounds, reminiscences to industrial and some aerial grooves. All in all a sound worth to give a listen.
