Shimmering Lights

Ben Hunt is a DJ and producer from Brighton who wasn't on my radar until recently and only came to my attention by chance when I was browsing Leeds Paisley Dark Label's Bandcamp page. Shimmering Lights was released at the end of last year alongside several remixes. A song that could pass for a lost work by the Chemical Brothers or Underworld. It may sound old school, but this trippy spaced out sound would have been hailed as great in other times.

Also worth listening to is the remix by Spellbound, also from last year, which has a strong affinity to post-punk.

Monday's Long Song

Last Thursday Khayem from the fabulous blog Dubhed featured Stinky Jim, a main figure in New Zealand's DJ-scene and dub artists. I think both of us were inspired in his music by the recommendation by Adam over at Bagging Area. Sand Gustures is the final track of Stinky Jim's remix album Social Awareness from July this year. The remixes by fantastic acts like Rude Audio and The Long Champs are one of the best songs this year and highly recommended.

Monday's Long Song

Another new album that I didn't expected in this way was Psychedelic Science by Rude Audio and Welsh producer and DJ Dan Wainwright. A Weatherhall inspired homage to the Westcoast sound in dub. Never thought that I would hear Grateful Dead's classic Fire On The Mountain in a way they did. There aim was to create a massive dub lp and they did it very well.

Arabiklan

A new release from Leeds based electronic label Paisley Dark arrived last week. It was the new release by Spanish DJ Jaime Rodriguez aka James Rod. It's a two song collection with additive remixes by Rude Audio and Hunterbräu. Arabiklan persuaded with a track that will work extremely fine on the dancefloor under strobe light with it's pulsating rhythm and Arabic influences.

Fire On The Mountain

These days arrived the news that London based collective Rude Audio will release a collaboration with Welsh musician Dan Wainwright called Psychedelic Science. They only released an appetizer from their forthcoming album Fire On The Mountain, but what I heard was more than I expected. Both artists were featured on this pages during the last years and they released a lot of outstanding music for me. Now they changed they musical style and combined Grateful Dead's Westcoast sound with British reggae. The result is nothing more or less a very big surprise that made me happy. I listened to this song the first time and can't stop to play it once again. This are some words they made when they released this album:

Inspired by radio play and club support from the likes of Don Letts and - bless his cotton socks and may he RIP - Andrew Weatherall and rooted in our love of US psychedelia, especially the Dead and Jefferson Airplane, we decided to buckle down and create a massive dub lp, steeped in mycological and herbal goodness, that would appeal to the head(s) and the feet and work in clubs, back rooms and bedrooms. We were joined by Ken Kesey's right hand man on the Acid Test, Ken Babbs and psychedelic and spiritual guru, Mr Ram Dass, for part of the trip.

2022 Short

After my review of this year's album just a few tracks that wasn't named enumeration but still worth to be named at this place right now.

Monday's Long Song

In spring this year Matt Dunn released Disko Drohne an EP an uptempo dancehall inspired piece of music that now was remixed by various artists via Paisley Dark Records. Jesse Fahnestock made under his stage name 10:40 a rework that was inspired by The Doors early Stone Roses with sitars and leads you to a dark atmosphere on a cold November night.

Since I could not decide between two versions, here exceptionally a second song. This one is by Rude Audio and with more bleebs and beats and a bit brighter than Jesse's one.

Monday's Long Song

A few weeks ago Rude Audio released Big Heat another EP for summer. Since the release it was on heavy rotation at my place and it will be one of the sounds of this summer. I think it was featured by Adam when the record was released but it is worth to feature this song in this series.

Monday's Long Song

Another release by Rude Audio that grabbed me from the first listen. They released their new EP Big Heat with a couple of new tunes and remixes from this song last week.  Rude Audio describes them as a bunch of South London and Geordie reprobates, with a history of putting on brilliant underground parties, creating critically acclaimed electronic music for top electronic artists and generally stumbling around squalid South East London barn dances. And this is what it sound like. Rich Lane's remix turnes into a dubby, reggae inspired electronic experience. Great stuff.

Monday's Long Song

The latest release by Rude Audio is a collaboration by Marc Ratcliff and Dan Wainwright who gave us a few of the best songs/remixes during the last year. I heard this song the first time last Friday when Spotifiy released new songs according my usual listen. It is a song that I can't get out of my head and I had to listen to it several times during the last weekend. It is a song that could appear on his missed monthly shows by Andrew Weatherall on NTS. A gritty dub inspired song starting slow and develops a spaced atmosphere the longer it goes on.

Rude Mission

Bildergebnis für rude audio

Mark Ratcliff aka Rude Audio released some new songs and remixes on Street Light Interference a few weeks ago and it is a bit the sound of the summer for me. I really love this Balearic inspired electronica and it's lovely and unique combination of ethnic-inspired urban house mixed with borrowed eastern elements and trance. This bassline and the groove is one of the best new ones I listened to the last months.
