Bob's Back Pages

A few days ago me and a few co-workers were sent home from work because we had contact in the first degree to another fellow which was tested positive on Covid 19. As I arrived at home I got a message to come back to our office immediately to make a quick test. So I went for another hour riding on the train. As I arrived another 25 people are waiting for the test. It was very unpleasant to get the testing stick deeply into my nose and waiting 15 minutes for the result. Thank godness the result was that all of us were tested negative. We all got the news about the pandemic from television and newspapers but you think different when you could be the one taken by the illness. When I came home I thought a lot about the luck I had. Later this evening I found a show on the internet by Lucinda Williams performing the songs of Bob Dylan. Unfortunately I couldn't find a single link or video of a wonderful version of It takes a lot to laugh, it takes a train to cry so here's a link to the whole show.

Stay safe people.

Changed The Locks

In addition to yesterday's post one of my country favorites. I really like Lucinda Williams voice and this song especially because it combines a great story with a country-stylish sound I can agree with. Nothing more or less a superb song.

Searching For The Perfect Riff

Back in 1989 Spaceman 3 released their third record Playing With Fire an outstanding record in this time for this music. When all the other music drifted away mostly in singer-songwriting or club-sounds these guys took a walk back into psychedelic areas with heavy guitars and riffs galore. It is still a pleasure listen to the sound of a record that was released almost 30 years ago. I remember the first time Spacemen 3 got on my radar was when Alan Bangs, one of the only radio-DJ's played their songs on his late night show. He produced his show for a greater radio station in Germany and as well for BFBS. Some folks called him as an epigone for John Peel but for me he introduce me to the music of Lucinda Willams and Cowboy Junkies. He was always contrarian to mainstream and they stopped his show when he offered the music of Frederic Chopin in his two hour show. I remember when he made his last show playing all the music he agreed with and one of the songs was Revolution a highlight of the upcoming psychedelic sound. Another story I heard was that he had a record collection of 11.000 albums. At one time he announced that he will go for holiday for a couple of weeks and some guys caved into his home stolen more than 3.000 of his albums. What a loss for him, because I am sure they stolen just one of the records he loved much.

On The Country Side

Bildergebnis für lucinda williams

A few days ago Lucinda Williams shuffled on my mobile phone once again and hit my taste like seldom before. I always loved her voice and her songs telling me short stories about the way of life that everybody can understand. So I checked out Spotify for more records by her and I was surprised how much she released during the last decades. Although I am not a huge fan of country music I always loved the great female voices of Emmylou Harris, Maria McKee and Linda Ronstadt. And in Mrs. Williams way the stories she told me in her songs. In this different way to my usual music taste it is good to finish the first working week of the year with Lucinda.

Return Of The Grievieous Angel

Bildergebnis für lucinda williams and david crosby

During the last days I listened a lot to country music because of the death of Gunter Gabriel. This is without any reason but this kind of music fits to very well right now. Listening to a lot of songs from this genre there were some classic songs that almost nobody can tear them down. And it is still pleasure to listen to them from time to time. I always liked the voice of Lucinda Williams much and their songs telling stories about normal life. This classic tune by Gram Parsons, probably one of the greatest new country musicians in the 70's is the best version I ever heard. I love the perfect harmonies of Lucinda and David that make this song so unique.
